It’s no surprise that the first wedding we ever planned holds a special place in our hearts. It marks the beginning of our journey as wedding planners, but also reminds of how it all began because of the unquestioning trust that one couple put in us.
While we plan and design weddings the most, we also do other events such as baby showers. Of course one of our most memorable one is the first one we did, which coincidentally, was for the very first couple we planned a wedding for!
We wanted this baby shower to be feminine, modern, with a touch of fine art aesthetics. This couple is one of the sweetest people we know and as their wedding design was also whimsical and feminine, we thought ice cream would be a wonderful inspiration to celebrate their bundle of joy.
We decided to use soft pastel colours that ice cream is typically known for and round it all out with plenty of fresh flowers. Specifically, we decided to use a pale pink paired with grey as the main colours. Pink brings the warmth and romantic touch while the grey anchors the colour and adds depth to the overall palette. We also included an abundance of flowers to bring a romantic and sophisticated aspect to the decor.
We wanted to create a simple and minimalistic backdrop to tie both the floral and ice cream aspects together. So we used loose stems of flowers to create floral ice cream cones as the main focal piece on the backdrop. Rather than using tissue paper or other materials, we chose fresh flowers as it gives it a more delicate and interesting twist to the ice cream cones.
As a special focal point, we included a handmade ice cream cart. While we typically plan and style events working with other rental companies, we created this cart ourselves as we couldn’t find what we were envisioning.
The ice cream cart was inspired by the invitation design and as we made it by hand, we could customize the colours and style so that it would flow together with the rest of the decor. This ice cream cart served not only as a photo point, but it also held favours for guests to take home. It did take us a bit of time to design and create the actual cart, but we think it was well worth the effort. Especially as the mother-to-be brought it home to keep for their baby to play with when she grows up.
For the activities during the baby shower, we prepared some games for the guests to play; for example, guessing who their baby will resemble. We also created a special ice cream sundae bar area so all the guests can have some fun creating their own sundae desserts.
But our favourite part of the day is asking the guests to write a letter to the future baby. We wanted to create a tangible memory for the baby so that she knows that so many people already love her before she was even born.
Along with the ice cream sundae bar and going along with the ice cream theme, we created marshmallow ice cream cones as favours. Not only are they a sweet way to remember the party, they also won’t melt and can be easily personalized. These were the perfect gift for the guests and definitely creates a lasting impression.
Especially when we saw the stunned look on the guests’ face, it was well worth our time and effort creating them. We had some extra ice cream cones and they were used as styling props and for the guests to take pictures with.
Some people say, “ice cream brings people together”, and this is certainly true as this mother-to-be’s closest friends gathered to celebrate together. The day was full of laughter and stories over high tea and ice cream sundaes. We are so happy with how everything from the flower ice cream cone backdrop to the invitation set came together. But more importantly, how happy the mother-to-be was. It truly is such an honour and also a blessing to be able to plan not only their wedding, but also their baby shower for this very special couple!
